There Can Only Be One
While watching the Kids Choice Awards this year, I saw some incongruous skits. From Will Smith dancing in front of pre-teens in suits to Chris Rock hanging out with clowns, these things that made sense from a marketing perspective but felt creepily over-sold to an adult. These acts are nothing compared to the Katy Perry "Part of Me" mid-show.
In an attempt to desexualize the salacious popstar the producers choose to give her body armor and a giant shield. The original music video features Perry entering the military and taking on a more combative stance.
In the video Perry embodies the women scorned who takes her life in a direction, This theme seems difficult to market in a kids show, but it felt to me like they went in the completely wrong direction, although MTV disagreed. Katy Perry was there promoting Smurfs 2 in her role as Smurfette, as well as her upcoming "Part of Me" tour.
