Netflix Might Pick Up 'The River' Season 2

A show that's been poor in viewers on ABC brings in a decent amount of views online. Netflix is looking into picking up The River for a second season [because of the views it gets online - hulu, youtube, etc.] if it's canceled by ABC. There's no official word yet because the show just finished airing season 1, ABC hasn't mentioned whether it'll be canceled or renewed, and netflix needs to determine whether the show will be worth investing into for online streaming.

840 Titles Disappearing From Netflix

Over 840 titles will be disappearing from Netflix February 29.  This is when the deal between the website and Starz ends, which means Netflix users are losing access to hundreds of first-run movies and Starz original TV programming.

The company has promised to use the funds set aside for their deal with Starz for licensing agreements with other companies, but who knows when that content (and what content) will be available.

How does this affect your Netflix subscription? When Netflix raised their prices, millions of subscribers cancelled their subscriptions.  Now that hundreds of first-run titles will no longer be available, how are subscribers going to react?

For a complete list of titles that will no longer be available after tomorrow, which includes which titles you can stream from Amazon Prime, click here.

Netflix Nabs Weinstein

This morning Variety reported that Netflix nabbed a licensing deal with The Weinstein Company, allowing the streaming and DVD service to exclusively stream TWC's content before any other streaming service provider.

However, there are films in this Weinstein deal that will not be covered in the contract due to an already existing Showtime contract that was put into place in 2008. 95 titles, some of which include The King's Speech and My Week With Marilyn, will not be available for streaming.

At least you can watch The Artist?

The Real Reason Starz Walked Away From All That Netflix Money...

This is a very detailed and interesting account on Business Insider, that expands on the Netflix-Starz relationship talked about in the final chapter of The Hollywood Economist 2.0. Netflix revolutionized movie consumption/distribution through its long-tail business model. Netflix is in trouble because it originally structured their streaming service though an all-important content deal with Starz. But now Starz recognizes that Netflix is actually one of their main competitors, and Netflix faces copycat streaming competition from all angles. What are your thoughts?

The Future of Netflix... Getting eaten by Apple?

After the Quikster fiasco of 2011, Netflix may be taking another hit in 2012 with Apple's entry into the TV Market with a new line of next-generation hi-def TVs and the possibilities of what they might do with the content end of the TV experience. Will Apple and Netflix co-exist or will Apple top Netflix in 2012?
