The Hunger Games breaks US box office record The Hunger Games enjoyed the third highest opening weekend ever, taking $214 million worldwide. By Flore
Eagerly anticipated fantasy flick The Hunger Games took $155 million in its opening weekend in North America and Canada, the highest domestic total for a film that isn't a sequel.
It is the biggest debut outside the summer blockbuster season, and ranks as the third-highest domestic opening weekend in history behind only last summer's Harry Potter finale and 2008 Batman sequel The Dark Knight, Lionsgate said on Sunday.
The film also went to the number one spot in nearly every country, amassing a global total of $214.3 million. What's more, The Hunger Games alone earned more than all films combined during the comparable 2011 dates.

The Hunger Games Kills it Opening Day
The Hunger Games is having no problem bringing in the cash, as the $78 million picture has already raked in $68.3 million on just the opening day of the film.
The film is seeing great success critically and financially, and it isn't likely going to slow down anytime soon. The film is making a lot of noise right now, and they will have to hope it will be enough to carry them into awards season which isn't anywhere in the near future.

Hunger Games Sees $15 Mil-Plus in Advanced Ticket Sales
Fandango's elite list of Top 5 Ticket Presellers has been dominated by Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, until today.
Today, the No. 4 spot is held by The Hunger Games, which has grossed a little over $15 million in ticket presales, overtaking The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. It's projected that by Thursday, it will pass The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and take the No. 3 spot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this has led some box-office observers and exhibitors to think that The Hunger Games will have one of the biggest domestic debuts of all-time, projecting it to open anywhere from $130 million and $140 million. It's already expected to surpass the $116 million opening of Alice in Wonderland (2010), making it the biggest March opener to-date.

John Carter Fails Miserably in the Box Office
"Moviemaking does not come without risk. It's still an art, not a science, and there is no proven formula for success. Andrew Stanton is an incredibly talented and successful filmmaker who with his team put their hard work and vision into the making of 'John Carter.' Unfortunately, it failed to connect with audiences as much as we had all hoped."
Rich Ross, Chairman of Walt Disney Studios

"The Hunger Games" Outsells "Twilight" in Advance Ticket Sales
The first film for the highly anticipated series The Hunger Games has officially taken the number one spot for most advance ticket sales in Fandango history from Twilight.
Fandango saw the most ticket sales in the history of the company the first day that tickets went up for sale for the The Hunger Games; Fandango reports that "hundreds of Hunger showtimes are already sold out for the March 23 opening."
If this is any indication for the success of the project, I think we may be looking forward to a hugely successful franchise.
