Taking a Different Road to Success

On an article on Variety.com, Gregg Goldstein looks into two independent films that used unique marketing plans to create buzz, which eventually opened the door to Oscar nominations.

The two films were Albert Nobbs and Margin Call. Both films utilized unique release plans, which involved minimal viewing opportunities, as well as using things like VOD to create buzz and availability.

Both films got nominations, as Albert scored for Glenn Close (best actress) and Janet McTeer (best supporting actress). Margin Call was nominated for original screenplay.

  1. Margin Call's success with Day and Date release was a big deal among the indie community. It made $4 million in VOD during the same time frame that it made $5 million domestic box office.
